Sean “Iya” Henry

Sean "Iya" Henry, co-author of Pieces of Jamaica 60

Sean Henry is best known for his lifelike illustrations of Jamaican scenery, culture and portraits in watercolor, pastel, ink, charcoal and mixed media. His extraordinary talent, distinct style and true depictions of island culture have helped him carve a niche in the Caribbean art world, leading him to exhibit in Jamaica, the Caribbean and the United States. After graduating from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Henry founded the leading screen printing and graphic house in Jamaica, IYA Limited, developing unique, custom-made apparel designs for individuals and major corporations throughout the island as well as internationally. Creative, experienced and deadline-driven, Henry has worked with many of Jamaica’s largest corporations, fulfilling their design and branding needs. He is always striving to express visuals and messaging in the most ingenious ways.

Art remains a refuge and a calling for Henry. In 1987, he graduated from the Jamaica School of Art. He became a dedicated painter in 2013, and his first solo exhibition was held later that year at Grosvenor Gallery with a sold-out viewing. He has since exhibited his work at group shows at Grosvenor Gallery, Kingston on the Edge at the Spanish Court Hotel, F&B Kingston, the Jamaica Biennial in 2018 at the National Gallery of Jamaica, and Gallery 1310 in Ft. Lauderdale. He also hosts annual exhibitions at Toyota Gallery in Kingston.

Though much of Henry’s work is in watercolor, he also produces ink, pastel, charcoal, graphite and mixed media pieces. His delicate yet insightful brush strokes create vivacious, picturesque scenes that instantly transport viewers into the vistas he captures. Henry’s work features beautiful scenes from around Jamaica and his Caribbean travels, portraying diverse elements of everyday people and places that are familiar and captivating.

In Pieces of Jamaica®: Jamrock Edition, Henry displays both original photos and artwork showcasing a comprehensive image of Jamaican life.
